<image:title>Technical Writing - User Guides</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve written and edited technical user guides for Wiki Education, summarizing thousands of complex Wikidata and Wikipedia policies and guidelines into newcomer-friendly text successfully used by 16,000+ students and hundreds of data scientists annually. This was a quarterly process through which I would: gather curricula tips from our Wikipedia expert staff consult with our target audience to understand objectives and questions write and edit copy that included only the most relevant instructions and context adapt our InDesign template to display content lead multiple stages of content and design review internally and externally lead printing and publishing Read a guide I developed about adding science communication content to Wikipedia In 2015, I produced a user manual for StoryCenter’s Listening Stations, an audio and video recording kit libraries can set up for constituents to capture oral history. The manual introduces the kit (equipment list, specifications, assembly instructions); how to set up the station (choosing a recording environment, layout of equipment, testing equipment, adjusting wifi and admin settings); the Listening Station app (app overview, sample introductory hand-outs for libraries to give constituents, how to use the app, storing files); and maintenance of the equipment (deleting videos at storage capacity, updating apps, general care).</image:caption>

<image:title>Technical Writing - Online Training Module Content</image:title>
<image:caption>While working with Wikipedia, I wrote and edited documentation for the first ever training program teaching data scientists to utilize Wikidata, the open linked data repository behind Wikipedia. I collaborated with both onsite and remote programs staff to translate technical curriculum into clear and concise training modules for beginner and intermediate audiences. I documented processes, managed communication channels, and juggled multiple timelines and priorities. Part of my work developing training content also included using YAML and Markdown in Github, testing in a local Ruby on Rails development environment, and synching with our upstream repository. <image:title>Technical Writing - UX Re-configuration</image:title>
<image:caption>I led a project to revamp Wiki Education’s Dashboard assignment timeline, the primary tool used by the university instructors and students Wiki Education supports. Instructors use the Dashboard to customize and manage an online Wikipedia assignment using a template assignment timeline and students use the Dashboard to stay informed and take Wikipedia trainings (see above work sample). Both groups had provided ample feedback to our technology team that the timeline view was overwhelming, confusing, and wordy. In this revamp project, I considered this feedback, helped identify solvable problems, and proposed changes. I consulted our technology director to make sure I understood the perimeters around making these changes and how to implement them myself. I then led multiple stages of review with our program managers. And I tested edits in a local development environment and submitted pull requests to our upstream repository through Github. My improvement activities included: Transferring unessential text on the timeline into relevant training modules, deleting redundancy (see the example image to the left for an example of one weekly module or see my Github commits for this project) Re-writing module content to be more clear/concise and to use more plain-language Re-organizing modules along the template assignment weeks and adding additional “exercise” modules—a shorter, more interactive training that breaks up the longer trainings and makes assignment expectations more clear to students (read the release notes I wrote for our Program Manager, Helaine, to learn more about these new modules I created) Leading stages of review to ensure content integrity and accuracy</image:caption>

Beautiful plant patterns reveal the hidden mysteries all around us. At the Chicago Botanic Garden, I write science stories about restoring both landscapes and our sense of possibility. <image:title>Climate Communications - Expanding the audience for community science</image:title>
<image:caption>Community science taps into a fundamental desire many share: to forge deeper connections with the natural world and, in turn, with each other. With 100k+ photo submissions, Chronolog is helping parks around the world monitor ecological changes through crowd-sourced time lapses. As I share these timelapses on social media, the overwhelmingly positive response has affirmed what community science advocates have been saying all along. Everyone can take part in making their environment better. As a consultant, I have developed a process for auto-aligning the creation of timelapses from hundreds of photos and am working with the web developer to integrate this feature more into their site. Check out my time lapse featured on Yahoo News here and in GoodGoodGood here. Listen to NPR’s feature of Chronolog here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Climate Communications - Processing climate grief</image:title>
<image:caption>How can our personal connections with the natural world aid our climate and conservation work? In the winter of 2021, I collaborated with StoryCenter to bring together an extraordinary group of women working in climate resilience to bridge science, story, and environmental & racial justice. The Earth Stories Project curriculum wove together land acknowledgements, poetry, story sharing, and media production, to support the creation of short videos that point to intimate connections to, and disconnections from, the natural world. On September 24, 2021, we shared these stories in a virtual premiere, featuring short interviews with the storytellers. Read about the project here and here. <image:caption>Averaging 18 billion page views per month, Wikipedia is the 5th most visited website in the world. Integrating scientific information about climate solutions into the site is a powerful way to bolster the public’s understanding of climate science. I work in the Wikipedia world supporting climate-related content initiatives on the back-end of the site. My work engaging experts in Wikipedia editing has led to media coverage in Canary Media, financial backing from the Climate Finance Fund, and partnerships with academic associations including the American Physical Society. Read about the initiative in depth in my blog post, Editing Wikipedia as Climate Action. Read more about how Wikipedia editing aligns with UN COP goals here. <image:caption>Supported by the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisers, the Intrepid Philanthropy Foundation funds professional learning projects designed by San Francisco Bay Area teachers through their LIGHT Awards. The Foundation commissioned a research study to evaluate the Awards' impact on teachers' growth. I edited and designed the report and executive summary, which present research findings, project profiles, and suggestions for expanding the program. In this project, I worked closely with the researcher to determine how to present findings and what data to highlight. I suggested branding and page layouts that supported the report’s contents, as well as the researcher’s professional identity. Read the 27-page report on the LIGHT Awards website.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wiki Education facilitates Wikipedia Initiatives with academic, private, and public sector organizations to disseminate research of importance to highly-visited Wikipedia pages. As part of my role supporting Wiki Education’s recruitment of partners in this work, I redesigned the landing page outlining the purpose of these initiatives and what the partner can expect from the collaboration. Before the redesign, prospective partners who visited the page were confused what role they would play versus what Wiki Education staff would take on. They also wanted to know more about what the full process would look like and how they could communicate the impact of the initiative with their audiences. The page also offers use cases for these initiatives, which are highly customizable and therefore difficult to communicate about in a standardized way. The page is more actionable now and has led to new partnerships at a faster rate than before. Visit the page here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Graphic Design - Compostable Packaging</image:title>
<image:caption>The world of packaging offers few sustainable options for fruit farms, who begrudgingly rely on the structural integrity offered by plastic packaging. With new technical innovation in cardboard- and paper-based packaging, this is changing. But sustainable packaging material is still a heavy financial burden for small family farms, who sometimes just can’t make it work. As Frog Hollow Farm developed their new trail mix product, I took on the project of researching and developing a sustainable package option. I consulted industrial compost and recycling experts, as well as packaging manufacturers, to determine which materials made the most sense for our production line, our product, and our customers’ municipalities. Most compostable packaging can’t be recycled and most recyclable packaging can’t be composted. Compostable packaging can only be composted in industrial-level compost operations, rather than backyard set-ups. And many of our customers’ didn’t have access to such services. What trade-offs were we willing to make and how could we keep the costs down, all while maintaining our integrity as a regenerative organic operation with deep values in sustainability? I led multiple stages of design review and the printing process. I also worked with our fruit packing team at the farm to make sure the bag we chose would fit their work flow. The product was launched in 2023.</image:caption>
